"You Seem To Be Offline" + Cannot scan with Avast + Cannot Uninstall

Hi, I’m getting errors with my free version of Avast. It’s stopped working. I thought I’d uninstall and install again, but can’t even get to that. When I try to follow the uninstall instructions, the application won’t start up.

When I try to update the definitions, it says, “You seem to be offline.” When I attempt to scan, it says the scan failed.

What do I do to set this up properly? It worked in the past.
