… I was “hit” over the weekend by this “low” (or I should say, BLOW!) malware…
I managed to “quell” its actions, not before creating havoc in my OS, IE and Avast!

After my victory (“a la Cyrus!”) I managed to get (only!) through Firefox on the Web Net,
trying to seek Info’s from Anvil! Unfortunately, the connection cannot be made…
(On IE clearly, all settings are gone… I have to contact the service provider!)

Can I do anything about Firefox-ALWIL connection?!

(…and, by the way… THANKS “essexboy” for the links… I will try to use them, over this
coming weekend!)

May not need to go to your ISP as the malware plays with proxy settings

Go to Control Panel and select Internet Options
Select the Connections TAB
Select LAN settings button
Ensure there is no tick in the Proxy Server box
Select OK and restart Internet explorer

And for Firefox there are instructions on this page and you want the setting to be no proxy

I got hit this morning by the same one.

It installed itself right past Avast IE 5 and then disabled the Avast program. I wanted to try a system restore but it would not let me open system restore.

I finally got it to work in safe mode and rolled back the system to yesterday. The “Antivirus Soft” was gone but Avast was completely corrupted and would not open.

I finally removed Avast completely and then reinstalled it.

At this point I am up and running but very concerned about the bug getting past Avast and crippling it. Now that I hear I am not alone, I am even more concerned.

I love the program but if it won’t catch these things what do we do?

As it turns out, it was not all gone and IE is still bogged down.

I’ll do the download and see if tat works.

Well it appears that I am screwed.

I downloaded Malwarebytes Pro and it picked up some bugs but I am still infected.

IE 8 is running slow and there is a program that is hijacking my browser.

I tried to sign into Ebay today and I was taken to a page that said they were “updating security” and wanted my CC number and security code, my SS number and my bank pin number. Obviously I did not give any information.

I tried to log in several times and always wound up at the same page.

I logged in on my wife’s computer with no problem.

Whatever got past Avast is still in there and is a BIG PROBLEM!

Luckily I am in the trial mode and have not paid for Avast yet.

I tried Avast because Norton bogged down my system badly but I never had a problem like this.

I guess I will have to take the computer in to a professional and start over but not with Avast>

I ran them all individually and only Superantispyware found anything. I cleaned out the results and still have the problem.

Maybe a Hijack this shot will help someone who can read it.

I ran the quick fix as suggested. At this point I can only get into IE about 50% of the time. The rest of the time it locks up and I need to use Program Manager to close it.

I ran Malwarebytes and it did not find anything.

I ran OTL and saved the logs and attached them below.

I can’t thank you guys enough fr the help. This forum alone is worth the Avast subscription.

OK found it - you have the latest MBR rootkit

Download and save HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe
Double click to run the tool.

THEN

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

[*]Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

With malware infections being as they are today, it’s strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

[*]Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it’s malware removal procedures.

I have saved HelpAsst to the desktop but when I try to open it I get a blue box labeled

c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe, that states

“Please wait” (then)

“HelpAssistant account does not exist
Press any key to continue”

When I press any key the blue box disappears and nothing happens.

I have saved it several times, tried opening it with 7 zip but nothing seems to work.

I’ll download ComboFix and stand by.

Continue with combofix please - Funny that it could not find it

I am writing this from my wife’s computer, as I can no longer communicate on mine.

I ran ComboFix and got a message saying it had to simulate a crash and reboot to get at the virus. I clicked OK and got the dreaded “BLUE SCREEN” telling me that I had encountered a fatal error and Windows was shut down to prevent further damage.

The file that the error was attributed to is
MBR.SYSDRIVER-UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS

The technical information on the blue screen is
STOP:OXOOOOOOCE(OXBAC60838,OXOOOOOOO8,OXBAC60838,OXOOOOOOOO)

The blue screen just hung for over 30 minutes and nothing happened. I manually shut down the computer and when I try to restart the computer the black screen comes up and will not start unless I choose “start in last known good configuration”

When I do that, I get into Windows and IE but the keyboard is dead and I can not type in the forum.

As an alternative solution, I am looking at a 500GB hard drive surrounded by a new Sony Vaio!

Have we reached the definition of FUBAR?

This mornings update.

I ran system restore and turned the computer back to before I ran ComboFix.

I am now back where I started. Everything starts and works just like it did before including MBR rootkit still mucking things up.
