automatic scans

Despite instructions to the contrary, I can not find the setting to prevent AUTOMATIC scans. Please help me find it.

What automatic scans do you mean?

Not really a reply,I’d like to join in if that’s O.K.
Is it possible to disable the automatic scheduled scan? It comes up after a Smart scan.
It’s just I like to decide what my computer does and when it does it.
Hope that’s not weird.
Thanks.

Smart scan is only there to scare you into buying a paid version of Avast.

Probably also why you can’t change what scan is on the home screen, like you were able to years ago.

Whilst I have been only using Avast Free for almost 20 years, I know of no Automatic Scan activation.
Users can Schedule a Scan to occur according to the settings they choose (weekly, etc).

So I guess that is why Igor is asking what scan.

The Smart Scan is an On-Demand scan not Automatic. I don’t do any on-demand scans including the Not so Smart Scan.

I haven’t run a Smart Scan in ages, but doesn’t it try to set a scan after the scary results? Maybe that is what is referred to.

No it doesn’t (as far as I’m aware), the only thing it gives is that there are things that need attention (essentially pushing the paid products) ‘Resolve’ I think is the word used.

A little like the Notice at the bottom of the Screen when you open the UI, see attached image.

Which is why Igor asked the OP ‘joephil42’ what automatic Scan it was ?

I think that may be true that after doing an initial manual Smart Scan, Smart Scan then sets a schedule to run automatically. This post says something about that: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=319798.msg1688356#msg1688356

I have not run a Smart Scan for ages, but I do vaguely remember that I once had to cancel a scheduled scan, which I did not realise was set and started out of the blue. I don’t know if that still happens with Smart Scan or not.

I seem to remember something similar. It would make sense too, if you reason that Smart Scan is an upsell tool, there might be motivation to have it periodically try to persuade you again.

I have no idea if that is still a thing.

I’m trying to attach an image to explain what I’m talking about but I can’t do it.
Can anyone show me how?

When you reply to a post you open a text input window, the option to attach is below that.

See attached image, click to expand.

I’ve had NO notifications of replies and have therefore been absent from this remarkably lively discussion. I have now discovered the well-hidden setting.

Igor - ‘What automatic scans do you mean?’
I mean open Avast windows telling me that a scan is happening.

Ron60 - I also ‘like to decide what my computer does and when it does it.’

DavidR - ‘I know of no Automatic Scan activation.’ THAT is my issue, I can not turn it off.

Rocksteady ‘Smart Scan then sets a schedule to run automatically.’ Quite possibly. Of greater interest to me than the cause is how to prevent it.
‘a scheduled scan, which I did not realise was set and started out of the blue.’ That fits my desciption of an automatic scan.

DavidR - 'I know of no Automatic Scan activation.' THAT is my issue, I can not turn it off.

A screenshot if you can capture it would be helpful in trying to determine what this automatic scan/notification might be about.

Thanks David R.done that it won’t work.

What didn’t work ?
You have to have saved your image to a folder on your local computer not online.

You need to first Preview your post to see the additional options.
As you can see from my attached image there are restrictions on the file type (png, jpg or gif images) and max of 4 attachments and max 1024KB total file size.

Thanks again. It’s a Jpg. 190KB.It’s just like attaching to an e-mail.
Nothing on the preview.I’ll go post maybe it will then appear.

Yep,that’s the way it works! No preview.
The main point is,there it is. Scan scheduled.

It’s O.K!
I’ve just figured it out. It’s under custom scans.I never set it (obviously) but a Smart scan was set for once a month. There’s a delete option.
Hopefully job done.

Yes the Preview is text based only.

Yes that should be the end of it.

I have been using Avast for a very long time that pre-dates the so called Smart Scan and when it did come along I don’t recall it being set to Automatic scan. For me subsequent program updates haven’t changed that. So I’m wondering if this is for new installations.

For me the Smart Scan is more of a vehicle to promote other Avast paid products. I don’t like that display, where the only way to find out what these so called ‘Advanced Issues’ are is to install the trial. I would NEVER do that, I’m sure there used to be an option to see what these were and for the most part I already had them covered.

I rarely if ever run on-demand scans and that includes the not so Smart Scan (though mine never started automatically). For a resident on-access antivirus like Avast, on-demand scans are a much depreciated requirement.

Yes indeed, that should be the end of it.Interesting stuff though. Thanks for all your help.
