Avast and BT Internet

Hi All

Is there any way I can use avast so that it doesn’t change my email server for me because my ISP won’t work if I have Avast. BT Internet doesn’t like the options on the server page changed, there must be a work around to make the two of them work properly.

I received the above as an email and I’m stumped because even though I use Avast I’v never had a problem like that with my ISP.

Peter

Avast doesn’t change any mail server. It just changes some things in the mail setup. This is needed for Avast to be able to scan the mail.

Avast and BT are working fine. Unless you have a account that uses SSL. That is not supported by Avast. For the rest, just setup the mail as if Avast isn’t there if you have a NT based system and Avast will take care of the rest. (you may want to chekc the authentication setting though if it is required)

If you have win 9x / ME:

  • setup the mail as if Avast isn’t there
  • run the MPW

edit: mpw = mail protection wizzard

Eddy

I’ve just found out my friend uses BT’s Premium Mail Service, she’s more money than sense ;D. This gives her added protection and I’m wondering could their protection and Avast scanning emails be in conflict?

Peter

Make sure Avast’s internet mail provider isnt been blocked by a firewall.

What Operating system does your friend have?

and

What email client?

Please read attached text document.

All I need to add is what it does to my user names for email … for the one for here it adds after the user name … “#mail.ic24.net” and to my main BT one it does the same … “#mail.btinternet.com

I do hope someone can help as I’m pretty fed up.
I’m Peter’s friend …

but I would like to use Avast as a back-up
It is never advised to have two different av's on 1 system. Mostly they will only lead to problems, which even make them both not working.

I suggest she makes a choice on which one to use.
If she chooses Avast:

  • have here completely remove AVG
  • reboot
  • do a repair of Avast
  • reboot
  • setup the mail as I described in a previous post in this thread.
    That should work.

If she chooses avg:

  • have here remove Avast from the add/remove in control panel
  • let here run the Avast uninstall util from the website
  • setup the mail as required by BT/avg

I think you’ve lost the track here. She wants to use Avast as her AV prog but its bu*garing up her email program so she’s reverted to AVG. She doesn’t run them both at the same time. You can have 10000 email programs on your disc as long as only 1 is active at any time. Give her credit for some intelligence. I’ve been promised a fiver for printing that.

Peter

If that is true, then why did she say that about Avast having as backup?

EDIT:
If she reverted to AVG there isn’t much we can do.
She needs to have Avast installed if we want to try to solve the problem.

Lets start again. This is my friend, I think, who I mentioned in the 1st message in this thread. Off course she still has Avast installed but at the moment she’s using AVG because Avast is blocking her email program so she deactivated it and made AVG her default AV program.

Eddy she wants to use Avast but it’s not working for her so I came here to the Avast forum for expert help for her. She got fed up waiting and joined me. Now we can wait together for expert advice ;D

Peter

ok, let me get an extra chair ;D

Does the email account uses ssl?
Does it requires authentication?
Do you have a website where I can read how the mail ‘normally’ should be setup for BT?
(for that particulair service ofcourse)

38Special

If that’s you Anne give Eddy all the info he wants. SSL means a secure connection I think.

Peter

Eddy,

My email doesn’t use SSL but does ask for authentication … which is why I can’t understand why so much gets changed when I try to collect my mail … as I said previously, it even knocked my broadband connection for six … said I was connected but no sign of the connection … no icon or anything.

38Special :frowning:

38Special,

If the email client uses secure authentication then avast cannot scan it as the email is encrypted.
I’m not aware of any Anti-virus that can scan SSL/TSL/Secure authentication emails :-, but we can always hope for this availability for the future i suppose

–lee

So there you go Anne ::slight_smile: Avast will not scan BT’s Premium Service emails so you might as well stick with AVG until Avast joins the modern world ;D

Peter

Hold your horses. ;D

Lee mixed up a few things.

Authentication is something else as SSL.
Avast is perfectly capable of handling smtp servers that requires authentication.

  • Make sure no email client is opened.
  • Reset avast4.ini [mailscanner] section to it’s default.
  • Setup the mail as if Avast isn’t there.
Test the mail. If you get an error let us know which one.

If this doesn’t allow you to use the mail:
Setup the mail manually as explained HERE
Test the mail. Let us know what happens.

Make sure that Avast is allowed in your firewall.

Eddy,

Thanks for that, I just couldn’t understand what/where I was going wrong.

I will test it and all that and let you know.

Anne

ahhh, there using SMTP, im with you, thought you were talking about the encripted version :-[, sorry for the mix up

–lee

Eddy,

I did everything asked correctly … I cut and pasted to print off … and it didn’t work and didn’t want to.

It’s totally messed up my yahoo settings which I now have to reset! So I’m not a happy person … I couldn’t even get up any user name settings on Outlook Express or passwords when I connected to the internet … I didn’t even get as far as I normally get, so what now!!!

I want to use Avast but something in either 98SE or Avast is conflicting … don’t ask what, I have absolutely no idea!

Anne

Real strange :-
But we are not gonna give up

  • remove avast using the uninstall util that you can find HERE
  • reboot
  • setup the mail as your provider instructs you
  • test the mail

If the mail is working at this point:

  • install Avast
  • reboot (Avast will ask you to reboot)
  • say yes when avast ask to protect your mail accounts
  • test the mail

Let us know what happens after each of the above steps or if it goes wrong,
let us know where exactly it goes wrong and mention any error you are getting.

Good luck and take your time.

@ Eddy,

I think this might be the email programme 38Special is using

http://www.btopenworld.com/mail

The “find out more” and “I’m new to email” links might give a handle on the settings to assist in your trouble shooting viv-a-vis avast! settings. Can’t help much myself as I’m cable here in U.K.
