Can not reactivate Avast Free Antivirus

After updating to the last version the UI shows the message “Your Avast Free Antivirus license is no longer valid”.
I try to reactivate it but after I click “Select” button in protection level selection window (I select “Free”) and reboot I still see the message mentioned above.
Very similar problem was reported here and here.
I understand that it does not affect the protection but it’s annoying.
It is certainly should be considered as a bug.
Any comments?

What does your Avast tray icon > Registration Information say ?

I have just registered my copy of Avast Free a few days ago without any real issues. Yes I had to repeat a couple of the steps, but I never rebooted until I completed.

In the second step image below, there is no easy way out, other than to use the X top right of the window to close it.

Going back to the UI it still showed renewal in 11 days, I tried the Activate button image3 and entered that same loop above. Eventually I too rebooted and at that point

I really don’t know why a program supposedly not requiring registration is so bloody complex. Well I think I do, they hope you will purchase the Upgrade option.

EDIT: Resized some of the images to fit screen.

Same problem. Registration window says expired – upgrade, but only paid version seems to be available.

Sorry, but that does not work for me. First step is ok, but the screen that opens does not look like step 2. There is no upgrade now button. There is a button that says something went wrong – try again.

Be sure Avast isn’t blocked by a firewall and try again.

Neither can I. My license expires in 3 days. Usually when you get under ten days the remaining days numbered would be in red but it’s not.

I clicked upgrade now but the select option under Avast free is not available.

Clicking Upgrade would be the last thing you want to do as that is to Upgrade to the Paid Version of Avast.

Read my post at Replay #1 above and try and follow those images and actions.

I did mine at 11 days to go (first notification), I have never seen the number of days remaining being in Red.

Rebooting worked for me.

A reboot does seem to resolve a number of issues relating to Avast Updates, etc. Perhaps in this case it can’t update the information in the UI until it is rebooted, which to me is somewhat excessive.

Hello,
I am having pretty much the same issue as you guys here. I didnt use my laptop for a few days and when I started it up two days ago there was a window from avast telling me that the licence has expired. Clicking the ‘Select your Protection’ button shows me the window in the first image from DavidR above. I then click on ‘Select’ in the free column and get the window shown in his second picture. When I close this window using the x in the top corner I get back to avasts main UI screen and it tells me that the licence has expired. If I go to the ‘My Licences’ menu and click on the ‘Upgrade’ button next to the expired licence the exact same things I just describe happen.
I have tried rebooting multiple times. I have also verified that avast is not blocked by firewall. (This would have surprised me anyways since it could download and install an update without a problem.) And I also made sure that I am on the newest version. I have also gone into windows settings - apps - apps and features and clicked the ‘Modify’ button for avast and then without changing the installation path proceded and the avast installer did something and then a message was displayd that everything was successfull. I also tried the uninstall button and then in the avast installer clicked ‘Back to avast’. That just put me back into the activation loop…
Basically I have tried everything apart from completely uninstalling and reinstalling avast.

This is really annoying and avast will now regularly just open a window saying that the licence is expired and I need to renew it.
I went through the loop many times by now and rebootet many times as well.

I dont understand why there is a limited time licence for the free version anyways. Cant they just promote the paid versions without that?

Do I really have to uninstall and reinstall avast in order to fix the issue? And do I have to do this regularly (each time the licence expires) from now on?

Let me know if you found any solution for this problem.

Btw: On my desktop I have successfully renewed my licence without any problems a while ago. And there are basically no programs on the laptop that are not installed on the desktop pc. The only difference could be a different version of windows 10 and a different version of avast at the time of the attempted licence renewal…

As I mentioned before “Clicking Upgrade would be the last thing you want to do as that is to Upgrade to the Paid Version of Avast.” As you have effectively gone down the payment route, I don’t know if this subsequently kills your attempt to renew the free product.

My system used in the renewal is the latest avast version on windows 10.

Try renewing the free version as you did again, avoiding the Upgrade path and then try a restart (full shutdown followed by a restart), nothe quick start of windows 10 as that effectively brings you back at the same state. Programs haven’t been shutdown, etc. etc.

I think you misunderstood where I clicked on ‘upgrade’. This did not refer to anything paid.
I went into the avast menu and into the ‘My Licences’ section. This section consists of two button at the top. One to log in to a avast account and one to insert a licence key. Below these there is a free licence listed and on the far right of the window there is a green button that says ‘Upgrade Now’. Clicking this button will open the selection window where you can select between the free and the paid version. (See image Avast-Renew-Screen-1 in reply #1)

I was very careful not to click on anything that corresponds to a paid version.

I would upload an image that shows the ‘upgrade now’ button, but I havent figured out how to do that. When I click on ‘add image’ it will only insert an image tag and drag-and-drop doesnt work either…

I hope I could clarify this a little bit. I was confused by the naming of the button as well at first…
It really should read ‘Renew now’…

Well Upgrade is completely different to Activate.

If I go to the 'My Licences' menu and click on the 'Upgrade' button next to the expired licence the exact same things I just describe happen.

Don’t you mean you clicked the down arrow to the Right of the Upgrade Now button ?
If I click the Upgrade Now button it takes you direct to a screen where the only option is Upgrade. That takes you to a Purchase page, cancelling that gives you another option Avast Premium Security 60 day free trial.

So I’m at a loss as to what you have been doing.

If I click on the down arrow a new line appears that just says ‘Subscription:’ follow by something that looks like a licence key consisting of three groups of six characters each. If I click on the green ‘Upgrade Now’ button it takes me to a window similar to the one in your second image just that there is a ‘Select’ button below the column for the free version on the left. If I click on ‘Select’ below the free version I end up with a window that tells me I can save 75% of the paid version. I close this window with the x in the top right corner.
After that my licence still is expired.

As mentioned before, when I click on the ‘Select Protection’ button in the avast main UI screen it will take me to the same window where You can select between free and paid. From there the process is the same.
I will also get to the same window and through the same process if I click the popup window avast shows every now and than, that tells me that my licence is expired…

Edit: Could someone quickly explain how I upload an image here? Than I could show the exact windows I get…

It’s German, but the screenshot should help…

Thanks Asyn.

So now with some images.
From either clicking any of the options in the MainUIScreen image or the ‘Jetzt Upgraden’ button in the LicenceScreen I get to SelectionScreen and when clicking on ‘Auswahl’ below the free version on the left I get to DiscountScreen. When closing this window with the x in the top right corner I get back to MainUIScreen, that still looks the same. Going to the ‘Licences’ through the menu will get me to the LicenceScreen that also hasnt changed.

Rebooting also doesnt help.

You’re welcome.
