Cannot load any page after updating to ASB Version 109.0.19987.120

Yesterday evening I was using Avast Secure Browser with no issues.

Last night both Windows 10 and ASB were updated on my system - the new versions are:

Avast Secure Browser, Version 109.0.19987.120 (Official Build) (64-bit)
on
Windows 10 Home, Version 22H2, OS Build 19045.2604

I’m also using Avast Free Antivirus (Program Version 23.1.6049 (build 23.1.7883.772))

Since the updates, I cannot load any page in an ASB browser window - network access seems to be an issue - browser window error displays “The connection was reset.” for any/all URLs tried, including the IP address for my local router management interface.

I have tried repair, and then uninstalling & reinstalling ASB, with reboots in between each (& after). I looked elsewhere to see if a similar issue has already been reported and was not able to identify one.

I have identified no other network issues on my system. Chrome and Edge both seem to work fine (I’m using Chrome to post this). I have checked the firewall and it looks to allow ASB traffic.

Any help in trying to diagnose &/or fix this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
\steve

Hello,

we are really sorry to hear that your browser stopped working.

Could you please provide us with the diagnostic information (Settings icon at the top-right > Help and About Avast Secure Browser > About Avast Secure Browser > Diagnostic Information) so we can understand the scope of the issue?

Kind regards,
Josef

Hi Josef -

One more question, please, do you have Opera installed as a second browser?

No, I do not - no Opera on this system.

Could you please try to update your browser to the latest version 110, going to Settings icon at the top-right > Help and About Avast Secure Browser and provide us again the diagnostic info after browser is re-launched?

Below is the diagnostic info after upgrading to version 110 and relaunching.

And BTW, after upgrading I get the same behavior/failures - errs are connection reset & time-out - when trying to access both an intranet web site or my local network router management page.

Could you please try to uninstall the browser using our Uninstall Tool: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/10/?option=sb#pc

And re-install from our official site https://avast.com

The problem I can see from your diagnostic info is that your installation is missing some of the default extensions which might cause the connection errors.

Hi Josef -

Thanks for your continued attempts to figure out this issue …

Per your instructions I uninstalled using the link to the uninstall tool that you gave me, rebooted, and reinstalled ASB 109 from https://www.avast.com/en-us/secure-browser#pc.

After the installation I unfortunately get the same behavior/failures - errs are connection reset & time-out - when trying to access both avast.com or my local network router management page.

The diagnostic info is below…

\steve

When uninstalling the browser, have you checked the option to keep your user data or delete them?

It would be better to uninstall the browser completely because in user data there can be some corrupted files too, but 1st of all, you may want to back up all your data.

Please follow these instructions for syncing your data before uninstalling the browser completely: https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/sync-secure-browser/#pc

You can sync them back later easily by singing to your account in the browser.

Josef

I am also experiencing the same on Windows 10 Pro.

When using Avast Secure Browser on any site: “This site can’t be reached. The connection was reset.”

I DO have MANY other Browsers installed on my systems and I DO use them all.
What is the issue with Opera Browser on same system?
Why does Avast (or Opera), not play nicely with others?

Note: I have a different Windows 10 Pro workstation, again with numerous other Browsers including Opera, where this is NOT an issue (yet).

My secure://settings/diagnosticInfo is below:

Yes, I’ve been deleting user data on all uninstalls since posting this issue - the only time I saved data was my very first attempt at uninstall+install (before posting this issue).

I just did an uninstall+reboot+install again. Before uninstalling I checked the user data location as specified by

profile_path=C:\Users\SMK\AppData\Local\AVAST Software\Browser\User Data\Default

and the ‘Browser’ folder was populated. After the uninstall, the ‘Browser’ folder didn’t exist.

After another reboot+install I still get the same failures. Diagnostic info again below, in case it helps.

thanks,
\steve

Hello CloudTechstr,

To your question “What is the issue with Opera Browser on the same system?”

We are having currently an issue with the latest Avast antivirus, it may block the internet connection for the Avast browser if there is also Opera installed.

We are working on a hotfix and it will be soon released via AV micro update.

Hello Smk,

I will file a bug with your problem and will pass it to our DEVs for further investigation.

Thank you for your patience.

Kind regards,
Josef

I’ve been having the same problem, uninstalled it and stopped using it. Switched back over to using Chrome and Edge, probably done with Avast’s browser after this last incident.

Yes I have the same problem , have done a PC restore back to the 11th Feb. This fixed the problem until the browser updated with the latest “patch/version” I have the same version as the post and same logs, The browser seems to be looking for a secure connection and just times out.

having the same issue - secure connection attempt times out - IOBit Uninstaller used to remove and then reinstalled it - disabled firewall - also use Avast Antivirus Pro 23.1.6049 (build 23.1.7883.772) and its firewall - also using Edge, Firefox, Opera (a really nice browser  without any problems - wired connection thru Netgear router to ISP modem - this browser worked fine until latest updates - be nice to get it fixed instead of me abandoning it

I have also Microsoft Internet Explorer (both versions, both unused for a long while), Mozilla Firefox (fewly used before the issue, now I am using it as a temporary placeholder), and Google Chrome (also fewly used).

Hello,

we have managed to fix the connection issue in Avast secure browser by updating the AV for users who also have installed the Opera browser.

To apply the micro update, please update your Avast Antivirus and restart the machine (the updated version should be after the restart 23.1.7883.773).

To those who don’t have Opera installed side by side with the Avast browser, the investigation is still in progress and our DEVs are working on it.

Kind regards,
Josef
