False Virus Alerts

Hello Forum

I’m hoping that someone may have seen this before and be able to help me.

I keep getting false virus alerts messages come up in the corner of the screen, which then tries to take me to some dodgy website when I try to close them.
I have Avast Premium, which does block connection to the dodgy website, but is not stop these virus alerts from keep popping up.

This is something I have had before with Avast, but can remember how I got rid of it.

I don’t understand why a paid AV like Avast isn’t detecting this and getting rid of it for me !

I have include a sample message.

Thanks

Bill

First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.

To start with having two active antivirus programs is like two dogs fighting over one bone - they conflict. So it is really hard to even hazard a guess as to why this is.

Though I don’t know if this is just within Edge, but that could conflict with the Web Shield of Avast.

I have seen similar detections within the Avast Web Shield and it could be coming from an installed app or cookie/s in Edge. In cases like this, this is generally what is recommended.

Clear browser cache - If you weren’t intending to visit the site (clearly).
Start by clearing your browser cache and cookies, including 3rd party cookies and restart your browser.

  • If that resolves it you should be good to go.
  • If it doesn’t try running your browser with add-ons disabled.
  • If that resolves it, have you added or updated any add-ons ?
  • If so try disabling that add-on - and restart and try again.

Hi David

Many thanks for taking the trouble to get back to me. I’ll give the things you have suggested and let you know how I get on.

Regards

Bill

You’re welcome, hopefully this will pin it down.

@William007
are these popups similar to your last post about McAffee popups you was getting in October 2024
They could just be a different variation of scam popups.

Hi David, I tried what you suggested and complete cleared the cache in MS Edge, and so far it hasn’t come back (but I will monitor it for a few days and see how it goes).

Hi Mr DJ, Yes they do seem very similar. I’ve just realised you are the member that helped me fix the issue when I had this same problem last time.

I think I mentioned in my post that I had seen this issue before, but had forgotten how to resolved it.

Because I don’t use the forum very often, I didn’t know how to easily check back on my original post and replies.

So my apologies for re-posting a similar issue without first checking my original posting (I will do my best to make sure I don’t make the same mistake again).

I will monitor my PC over the next few days to see if the issue returns (hopefully not).

Thanks

Bill
