if anyone is out there and can help I would really appreciate it. I was performing a download lastnight and was told there was a virus detected, I followed the instruction and place the virus in the chest. I just tried uninstalling the program that brought the virus in, during this it mentioned something about checking for programs or files that were active or modified, being new to computers I cancelled the uninstall to try to find out what to do, then when I checked again the uninstall feature was gone eventhough I cancelled it. I wrote the info down about the virus last night before it went in the trash I don’t know if this will help or not: ~GLH0031.TMP, ORG:c:/programFiles/FlashGet; Last changed 6/7/05 and the virus name was Win32:Adan-062… when I checked in the virus database it said that it was EXE what does this mean and what can I do??
Hi and welcome,
The fact that Avast has detected the virus means it has done no damage to your system.
What you now should do is search for the temp file that represents the portion of the file that had been downloaded and delete it.
Because it was an EXE file means it was an executable file. It couldnt have actually executed (done anything) until it was entirely downloaded and initiated.
good luck and ask more questions if you dont understand anything.
Run a boot time scan if you feel you need more assurance.
Thanks for the info what is a boot time scan and how do I run one? sorry for the stupid questions but as I said I am new to this whole computer thing. I try to delete the other files that were associated with this FLashGet program that are in my program files on the c: but some of them are .dll and won’t let me delete them any suggestions? ???
If you have XP or Win2k, you could enable a boot time scan.
Try the, schedule boot-time scan in avast’s menu (or try the ‘Schedule Boot-Time Scan’ using RejZoR’s AEC avast! External Control Tool
Are you using Windows XP?
Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
If you don’t ask you won’t grow up ;D
Boot time scanning could do it. Access denied means, generally, that the file is in use by another process (program) and cannot be repaired/cleaned/moved/handled by avast! at that time.
I am not new to computors but am still in the learning process and have several corrupt files and also one that reads “the file is a decompression bomb”.
What is does this mean and how can I get them off my computor. ???
Any help would be great !
Decompression bomb is just something that unpacks to an unusually big amount of data even though it’s rather small (i.e. has a high compression ratio, for example). It’s nothing to worry about, you are just informed that avast! will not try to unpack the archive (you may not even know that it’s an archive, but it seems like it is) because it may take VERY long to process.
(quoted from Igor: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=15389.msg131213#msg131213)
Decompression bomb is a file that may be rather small, but decompresses to an enormous amount of data (when processed as a packed archive). Such file are not malicious per se, but they may block an antivirus program when it tries to scan them.
This kind of files is rather hard to detect (and avoid) precisely - so, it is possible that there are some false alarms. It’s not a big problem in this case, however - the “decompression bomb” announcement actually means something like “The file has a very high, maybe even suspicious, compression ratio and the AV is not going to scan the archive content”.
I’d suggest to ignore these files.
But you can change values into avast4.ini file to configure how avast should work with these files.
Click ‘Settings’ in my signature for more info
Cheers thanks for putting my mind at ease, but now I have just completed another scan ana beside Current Scanner Status it says Scanner Is Infected, what can I do about this ???
Hey guys thanks for all the help the other day I ran the scan and everything checked out great. I did a search of the c: to make sure and there is nothing that contains FlashGet. My next question is does anyone know of a program similar to this that will help me with my downloads? The stuff that I downloaded with the FlashGet program took almost 8hours to complete.
DUH!! I forgot also when I got to All Chest Files there are 5 files. I scanned each one twice and they come up --no virus-- what do I do with the now? Can I put them back into my PC? thanx
Muzzell57 :
If I were you, I would focus on HOW to protect my machine
FIRST and secondly on "convenience". Therefore, I
recommend you read the info at :
http://members.accessbee.com/mitch/PhantomPhixer.html
While there, focus on his "IE and OE settings","XP settings"
and "Newbie and Oldie's lists" sections.
Flashget is the firefox plugin for download managers, I use it in conjunction with Leechget download manager which is stable and safe
First the virus chest has different sections, the System Files section contains some backups in case these crucial files get infected.
There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, they can’t do any harm there. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a week or two. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.
Hey Spiritsongs, I did as you suggested and went to the site, there was alot of great info however i’ve run into problems. When I go to follow the steps as layed out in IE and OE I can’t find OE all I get is an email thing. When I go to set up the security i have more things that should be marked than what is listed and one that isn’t there at all (MSVM). I am getting soooo upset I don’t know what to do. I need help but don’t know alot about computers. Someone, Anyone help me please.
Which folder are they? I mean, system folder, infected files folder or user folder?
Tech, this is the info from the chest; 2 are kernel32.dll, 2 are wsock.dll and 1 is winsock.dll. Original locations are all C:windows/system32 last changes for all were between mar 31/03 and Aug 4/04 Transfer times were Dec 8/05-Jan8/05. does any of this help?
Spiritsong if you could try emailing me I will let you know what all of the things listed in my Internet settings are so maybe you could help me set them up, as for the outlook express thing I THINK i figured it out I have MS Office 2000 professional on my pc, not outlook express, is this right??
Backups and the new updates (from Windows Update site). Nothing to worry.
SPIRITSONGS; I wrote a reply to your message, when I tried to send it I got a messsge saying to retry submitting it because my session (or something) had ended, can you let me know somehow if you got it because when I tried to send it i got a message saying to try resubmit because my session (or something) had ended and I want to make sure that you got the message cause its very important. I need your help. I did save a copy to my outbox just incase.
Muzzell57, it will be easier and safer if you send the message again to SPIRITSONGS 8) as you’ve saved a copy of it…
Thanks Tech, did however get a message from Spirit early I guess the message got through after all. Question for you though, if I save a copy everynow and then (Because I’m not really a fast typer) will it update it if its in the same message? Thanx
