How to disable OneDrive for windows 10 version 1803 64 bit home

I thought I had done this by using the CCleaner Startup option to enable/disable programs at startup. However repeated Avast Free Smart Scans revealed that OneDrive is still a significant drag on performance. Then I used the Win10 Search for the program and found a Desktop OneDrive app still there and followed the Win 10 instructions to uninstall it. According to Win10 which referred me to the Win Defender page, I was instructed the Administrator (i.e. myself!) had blocked access to it. This may mean that it is still there - or - that there is no access because it was removed (by myself, who uninstalled it).

Avast Free Smart Scan still insists that it must be running in the background, as it is flagged as a program that is slowing performance.

Footnote if relevant.
I use a laptop and thought it advisable to get a login. Initially this went via and email address and user name. I do not know whether Win 10 still refers to that email address, since I changed the user name to a Local one, the idea being to restrict it to me alone, excluding external MS. This brings me back to the problem many users have : we object to having our files stored by Win 10 ( & OneDrive) elsewhere by MS.

After turning off / uninstall did you reboot?

Yes, not immediately, but within 15 minutes (yesterday).

Right click the OneDrive icon in lower right toolbar/tray and choose settings, then from options you can untick start with Windows.

Once you’ve done that then use CCleaner - Tools/Uninstall to remove OneDrive, done  it’s an easy way of removing other unnecessary Apps as well.

There is no OneDrive icon on my lower right toolbar/tray. With Cleaner as mentioned I used the Startup tool to disable it, according to which it still is disabled. It never appeared on CCleaner Uninstall as an item.
I tend to think that it was successfully removed, and the Avast Smart Scan is misinforming me. Smart Scan also misinformed me that the Win updates were way out of date, when I had fully updated them when I bought the laptop last week…the are up-to-date today also.

Is there a problem with this Avast Smart Scan perhaps ?

Have you also looked in Task Manager/Start-up to double check Windows is seeing it as Disabled? right click taskbar and choose Task Manager, you may have to click “more details” to see task manager processes, on Task Manager toolbar click the Start-up tab.

If One Drive is disabled there then it’s probable that smart scan is reporting falsely :-\

I had not checked on Task Manager. Thanks for that. I bought this device in Germany, but of course the layout is the same, although it would be nice to switch the OS to English.

No, TM is not seeing it all, no dis/enabled. As well as under Autostart which displays the same as CCleaner (I understand CC runs directly off whatever OS you are running), I checked all TM lists and could not find anything mentioning OneDrive at all, unless it has an alias.

I still have a hunch that by opting out and not completing the email sign- in method, I have somehow blocked access to the complete uninstallation of Onedrive.

I have just checked with Win 10 Start again, entered ’ OneDrive’ and this OneDriveSetup Desktop App is back. Perhaps this is the result of me floundering around searching for OneDrive in the Windows Settings
Perhaps I should uninstall it again and reboot immediately? I await the wisdom of your greater experience in this

The new laptop is running fine, but I don’t want it to deteriorate from over-loading.
It’s an ACER Aspire 17 - SSDN processor - HD graphics - 4GB RAM - Pentium CPU N4200 @ 1.10 GHz

Hello Bob 3160

Thanks. I tried the ’ gpedit.msc ’ route once before, but Windows still tells me I have mistyped and that no such file can be found.

Windows also keeps reminding me that I should change my email log-in password ever since I abandoned the email login method for the use of a ‘local’ log-in method which I intend to keep.

Whether these two events are related I have no idea.

CraigB and Bob3160 again,

I just tried to access the Onedrive Desktop app that reappeared yesterday in the Start search. I was told that the file had either been altered or moved. I tried again and was told that that the Administrator had blocked access to its settings (I am the Administrator). That is why I guessed that my faulty email log-in for Start (which I do not use) may have something to do with it.

Windows 10 Home does not have gpedit.msc installed. You need Windows Pro or higher to run this. To get it you must upgrade.

All Home or Starter Editions of Windows beginning with XP, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 do not have it.

That would explain it, thank you. Any tips on removing or disabling OneDrive in my home version?

McChain,
BTW I have just run the Avast Smart Scan again. There was no sign of OneDrive activities as Performance/Programs slowing down you PC/ issues at all, so maybe my initial uninstall of it worked after all. That does not explain why the OneDrive Desktop App suddenly reappeared yesterday on the Win Start search though. I have no idea what is going on, but it could be that Onedrive is no longer there.

Thanks very much Bob3160,
Your link, a well laid out article, has given me something to work through as soon as I can. I am not yet 100% convinced that I am rid of Onedrive (see eralier posts).

I’m just passing along the information. I personally use One Drive and find it useful.

the .dat file was downloaded and installed, having translated itself into German automatically. It performed as expected and I opened the Windows component file with its 2 lists - advanced and standard. In neither will you find the word “onedrive” in any configuration.
It seems as if, according to Smart Scan, that ‘onedrive’ was uninstalled by me successfully after all, when I followed the right-click instructions after I found the Onedrive Desktop App 2 days ago.
Thanks to you I now have a tool for dealing with ‘onedrive’ or anything else unwanted, should I need to. Much obliged.

I attach the 2 files I found for your interest (I doubt if the German presents much of a problem).

Nice to know your problem is solved. Enjoy the new tool.
Something I’ve installed on my systems that aren’t running the pro version of Windows 10.

“I personally use One Drive and find it useful. :)”
Ha, I only wanted to disable it. Thought that CCleaner Start-up function did the job, but when it popped up on the Windows Start search I uninstalled it, as ‘disable’ wasn’t available…
What happens if I discover that I want it back? I bet you know the answer.
