After posting in here yesterday I noticed there was an updated version of Avast (24.8.6127) which I thought might be worth trying. Update went fine and things seemed to be working just fine. Then come this morning I get the old “Ooops somethigs gone wrong” banner in Gmail and not long after started having the exact same issues again with searching on Firefox. Disabled the Webshield and normality is resumed immediately!
So if Avast and AVG both share the same Engine, software, shields and definitions will have to cast my net further afield I guess! But where?
I don’t want to disappoint you, but AVG has exactly the same engine, the same shields and the same definitions, updates and version numbers.
If you download avg antivirus free today, you will have build 24.8.9372, which is the same version as the avast version you are currently using.
It goes without saying that if you had a problem with avast web shield you will have the same problem with avg web shield.
You will also find an avg beta section in this forum which leaves little doubt as to the avast/avg correspondence. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=87.0
But you can test if you have time to spare.
Things are running as they should with the Webshield disabled, have re-enabled the other shields for the moment, all nice a peaceful and stress free and no more “Oops” banners on Gmail. Like you I’m not happy not having the webshield active for long so likely to switch to AVG shorterm, just need to make sure Avast is totally uninstalled though so will use the Avast uninstall tool before installing AVG.
Glad I took the time to check this forum and create an Acc. It saved me switching from Firefox which I’ve been using for years. Just hope they get Avast back to being it’s normal self as I’m a longtime user of it also!
The issues you describe are exactly what many of us have been facing, and the solution of disabling Avast web shields is what fixes all of it.
For now, I either continue using regular Firefox browser and closing out the browser and relaunching it and then restoring previous session every time Gmail or Google Search or Calendar breaks (it always shows that “Ooops” yellow popup in Gmail when it happens)… or I use Firefox private browser and everything works consistently. I don’t feel safe disabling web shields as a permanent fix.
Have just created an Acc here as think I’ve been suffering the same or similar problems with Firefox 129.0.1 64bit whilst I’m using the latest
version of Avast on a Win10 laptop.
My problem was very intermittent, would be browsing just fine and then suddenly evertime I entered a search term in Google, my regular search
engine, nothing would come back and the search field I’d filled in would become blank. Was convinced it was an issue with Firefox and have been
trying to resolve it with help from some of the Mozilla forum members.
Had found a work around by going to a Private Window which always worked on any search. Strange though that on returning to a normal browser
window I able to enter search terms again and get responses as expected.
Another issue I was experiencing was with having my Gmial email account open I would often see a yellow notification banner at the top saying something along the lines “There was a system problem error No #001”. I think both issues started at the same time but can’t be 100% certain.
Have been jumping through various hoops with help from the Mozilla Firefox forum all of which failed to resolve the issue, was starting to consider ditching
Firefox and someone suggested disabling Avast as they saw something in the screenshots I posted of the troubleshooting tool within Firefox. It was the last thing I tried, currently have Avast disabled and everything works as it should with no problems searching and no issues with Gmail either. From what I’ve read here it seems that the Webshield is the culprit so will re-enable the other shields and see how that goes sort term.
Haven’t read through all of this thread but has anybody tried uninstalling Avast and doing a fresh install? Have been using Firefox and Avast Free for many years now and never had issues like this previously and would like to keep both.
Only ever had one major issue and that was with Comodo Free Firewall which broke the wifi network adaptor on my sons PC. Days spent sorting that out and have steered clear of Comodo since, their support was none existent, luckily someone on their forum had created their own tool to clear the problem.
No feedback from Avast until now. Just to reinforce it, the problem isn’t exclusive of the free version. I have a license for the Avast Premium Security and I’m experiencing the same problem.
I would advise anyone else that can to get in touch with Avast Support and report the issue. Maybe if a lot of people do so they will take a look.
After Updating today with Avast Free. Software Updater going blank. I have done repair in geek:area but no avail, tried changing modify component still the same. So I uninstalled it with avastclear. And the install it again via offline version. Problem was fix, the software updater showed up. But I update it again, problem came back. Software updater going blank again.
After last update (not 100% sure) AVAST Cpu usage 32-35% all time, when any net activity. Google Chrome.
After restart, cpu near zero. I try off all shield, no change.
Only way reset cpu usage is Win10 restart. I have AVAST few monts, but this is weak or two problem.
Any idea?
I’m not too tech-savvy but my guess as to what is happening is that Gmail periodically attempts to automatically refresh the page (every few minutes) to show new messages, and when it does that, Avast shields block it and then Gmail (as well as Calendar and Search and Youtube, or any site administered by Google) gives an error message that it is offline. It is not offline because when I manually refresh or reload any other tab or page or site, it loads instantly. And when Gmail gives this error popup, it becomes impossible to view any Google site. Yesterday I was in the middle of editing an event on Calendar and I got a popup saying I was offline and some functions would not be available. Of course I could not save the edit and had to close out the browser and restore previous session and start over. And when this happens, and I try to open a new tab with Gmail it stalls out, and when I try to open Calendar or Search it just won’t load the page and the tab remains blank.
So it’s something to do with the site functions of Google sites, esp. Gmail, which Avast is blocking for the past several weeks. It’s not really ‘random’. Though it’s a mystery why more users aren’t having the same issue. Seems to be a problem with Windows 10 users of Gmail/Firefox/Avast Free Antivirus.
