I manually updated; however it seems to have corrupted my Avast program in some way, since it failed to open and run resident or the user panel, even after rebooting! I could not access the Alwil program files too. Panicking as a computer ignoramus does, I proceeded to uninstal Avast; the Windows add/remove progam option would not function so I used the Avast uninstal facility, which worked. However an Alwil folder entry remained in my Programs list, but I could not access it! So I am currently scanning my de-Avast-ed computer with Bitdefender Online scanner, a slow process. Any ideas Mr Avast rep?
I will probably try to reinstal Avast afresh afterwards, but I would prefer to reinstal the prior 4.7.817 if you could supply a link please (I’m guessing the web download would update to 4.7.826 by now).
when i did a manual update, it downloaded the update, it showed the package was corrupt and i had to reboot.
now there’s no avast. it won’t reload, not even older versions. it’s corrupted other apps.
Did you both try the avast uninstall tool by booting in Safe Mode? Just guessing…
Are you logged as the Administrator account? Can you manually change the access permissions of this folder?
Donki, as a workarround, can you try to add a REM (comment) entry before the avast driver line at the bottom of the file C:\Windows\System32\Config.nt (you’ll see examples in the first lines of this file, there are a lot of comments started by the word REM).
Boot. Does it solve the problem by now?
I used System Restore to go back to yesterday and the Avast program reappeared but with a pop up to reboot, which I duly did. After reboot: no Avast program running and I cannot access the Alwil program files. I have an desktop shortcut icon (application symbol) and an entry of the Avast program in ‘add/remove programs’ list.
How can I proceed please? Should I remove Avast again using the Avast Uninstal facility, maybe this time in ‘safe mode’ (in which case how do I do that)?
Anybody with this “package corrupted” problem… can you please post here the last part of \setup\setup.log? (right after the problem occurred)
Or, you may upload the whole setup.log file to ftp://ftp.asw.cz/incoming (rename the file somehow first, so that the name doesn’t colide with somebody else’s upload).
I still need to know how to remove Avast program fully please! I used the Uninstall facility because the ‘add/remove’ would not work. But I still have Avast folder in Programs which I can’t delete or even open.
What exactly does it mean “locked”? That it cannot be removed? Well, there are programs running there (the previous version, present before the update), so it’s not surprising.
Or, you mean that you cannot even enter the avast! installation folder, e.g. in Windows Explorer, and read its files?
