No voiceover after virus updates

Avast no longer “speaks to me” when the virus updates have completed. Under “settings” and "sounds’ the “voiceover” is enabled as it has been since installation but, all of a sudden, no voice - although the updates are proceeding as normal.

Any idea why?

Thank you.

Have you turned the volume down on your computer without realizing ,is the audio pluged in, updated your sound card drivers lately ? try a repair of avast through remove programs.

You didn’t happen to select silent/gaming mode recently ?
Do you get the pop-up notification that an update has been done ?

Hi and thanks for responding… Sound is working just fine on everything else… I have not made any changes to anything so can’t figure it out… but - no, I don’t even get the pop up notification now…

OK, that is a start as if you aren’t getting the pop-up either then there is no way you would get the sound notification as I believe they would be linked.

So are you actually getting auto updates ?
Check to see if the Virus Definitions are being updated, avastUI, Maintenance, Update, latest VPS version is 110819-0.

Hi David, Yes - I am still being updated. My system is apparently secure… I just did a repair under Add/Remove Programs and rebooted and then did a manual update but no notification of any kind although it does indicate an update was done 2 minutes ago… I puzzled…

… Yes - latest VPS version is 110819-0 - that’s what I show so I really puzzled.

You don’t get notifications on manual updates only the auto updates, as avast assumes that you know you have run the update check.

Avast main GUI → Settings →

→ Updates → engine and virus definitions → automatic
→ Updates → show notification box after automatic update
→ Status Bar → Definitions Auto updates (this is just to be sure)
→ Sounds → Enable avast sounds, and enable all of them

Wait until the next automatic update and report if it works.

Hi again, I just ran a scan and did get the voice informing me that scan was completed…so the voice mechanism is functionning… I will wait until the next auto update and see what happens and report back… Thank you.

Yes - everything is as you indicate it should be…I’ll report back… Thanks so much again.

An automatic update took place about 18 mins. ago and no pop-up or voice…what should I do?

Thanks again.

I honestly don’t know as your settings that have been mentioned shouldn’t impact on the sounds.

Though there is one other option I don’t see, avastUI, Settings, Sounds, Voiceovers, Use Voiceover (when available). This should be on by default, but since you are getting other voiceover sounds (I think), it may not be this either.

Hi David, yup- that one is ticked off also… very odd.

I have put in a ticket for it so, hopefully I will get a resonse. In the interim, it seems all is working… just no pop-ups or voice (but I did get the voice upon a scan completion)… so I’m baffled. Thanks for your help… If you think of anything else, please let me know. I have searched the forum and can’t find anything… except people wanting to turn off the notification…

OK, so no pop-up after the late auto update either ?

Another thing to check (for XP) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\sounds\1033 is the default sounds location for English language, have you got all the files I have in my image ?

This is the location for Vista, win7 C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\sounds\1033

I also have a custom folder (which I created) as I use other sound files (old avast sounds). I wonder creating a custom folder with other sound files, these are used in place of the 1033 folder sounds if you have a custom folder.

Hi again, although the path is a bit different, I do have the 1033 files in the sounds directory… this realy is baffling…

Having the folder isn’t the issue, it is having the files needed for the sounds, especially the one for the Virus_db_Update.wav.

Yes, that file is there along with five others… interesting thing I just noticed is that those files are also sitting outside of the “sounds” file with the exception of the ‘welcome’ wav which I do not have selected as I believe it’s only applicable to Windows 7 and I use XP… So, not sure why those files are also sitting outside of that file… I apologize - I’m not the most technical person…

… but the sound issue wouldn’t explain why there is not even a pop-up, would it?

I really appreciate your help.

OK, maybe now I am getting somewhere but I don’t know what to do…within that 1033 file I clicked “play” on the virus update wav file and … it played but it also opened iTunes…as did the other Avast wav files… they all played and they all opened iTunes…

Help… I rarely use iTunes so this is very odd…

Kpaw.

Do not worry about iTunes. It is just that you have iTunes set to play your wav files as I have my wav files to be played by VLC.
