Program conflict issue with Zonealarm!

I normally use Zonealarm as my virus/spam prevention - I wanted to try the boot scan feature in Avast’s free trial version, so disabled zonelarm, downloaded Avast, and did a scan with it - took HOURS!

Then, when I next rebooted my PC, it wouldn’t allow any programs to open/activate, and locked up when that was attempted. Apparently, as Zonealarm automatically re-activates upon reboot, it conflicts with Avast, and creates this issue.

I was unable to remove Avast thru usual “remove software” function (XP, svc pack 3), so had to go thru safe mode to do so. BUT, now with Avast removed, and all other functions restored, my PC will no longer connect with the Internet thru my DSL modem.

I’m currently using my laptop, as I work at restoring connectivity of the desktop PC - looks like it might have had the drivers removed or trashed in the “network connections” module of Control Panel during Avast removal, still working on it…

SO, you might want to be sure to remove any existing virus/spam/spyware software before trying Avast - I’ve tried MANY other free sample virus programs in the past, and never ran into this problem before.

If anyone else has experienced this, what did you do to restore Internet/DSL connectivity?

Disable is not enough.
ZA antivirus is conflicting with avast at driver (low) level.

Obviously true - but the water’s over the dam - how do I recover Internet connectivity? I’ve tried system resore, but it fails, and won’t restore to earlier date, probably another Avast footprint issue?

Drop ZoneAlarm asap…!

Well, Avast has been removed, and somehow, unless this issue has been cured in other similar situations by removing ZA, I seriously doubt simply removing ZA will solve an Internet connectivity issue - HAS it been done this way before?

What I’m trying to say in the above, is that Avast has been (apparently!) successfuly removed, all functions including ZA seem to be back to normal EXCEPT for Internet connectivity - I can easily remove ZA, IF that has been shown in other very similar circumstances to fix the connectivity issue - perhaps an appropriate pointer to another related thread? What I want to avoid, is simply shooting in the dark, hoping for a fix thru an untried or unproven path…

A forum search from the main page will lead you to assorted ZA/Avast! conflicts.
I doubt removing Avast! did anything to your network drivers.

ZA is a firewall, should that not be one of the first things to look at if you cannot connect?

WELL, Avast has been removed - and supposedly, the conflict issue with it - and I’ve disabled the ZA/XP firewalls, so that approach would seemingly be taken care of as well…

Next?

Gargamel360,

ZA markets a whole range of security products. Their av is by Kaspersky.

It’s ZA’s av that has conflicted with avast!. He shouldn’t have run both at the same time.

Running two av’s at the same time can have disastrous results as we see here.

avast free does NOT change anything regarding to connection. It’s a pure antivirus only, no firewall.
The problem is ZA. Believe us.

  1. Uninstall ZA
  2. Use this in safe mode: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
  3. Reinstall avast.
  4. Install a free firewall (pc tools, comodo, etc.)
  5. Be happy…!

OK - as I figured, and mentioned earlier, that approach was a waste of time…

Avast had ALREADY been removed, but I went ahead - against my better judgement - and uninstalled ZA, used safe mode to run the Avast uninstall program pointed to above, and NOTHING changed in regards to restoring Internet connectivity. All that really changed, is that now I have NO antivirus protection installed. ::slight_smile:

Let me make it perfectly clear that I in NO WAY am blaming or criticising Avast - OR ZA for that matter. I have run a fair number of other free virus programs before - this is the FIRST time I’ve experienced this issue, but that’s life, and now the issue HAS arisen, and I must either find a specific (and KNOWN!) fix, or else reinstall my older version of XP, and then go thru all the upgrades, and reinstall all my MANY programs, then restore all my files - about a full days work!

Obviously, I’d prefer to simply restore my PC’s ability to link up with my DSL modem, and the Internet!

And NO, I have NOT reinstalled Avast - NOR do I have the faintest illusion that doing so will magically restore my Internet connectivity.

I’m still looking for a fix - but one based upon pretty well established past experience - just random shots in the dark only compromise my PC further - and needlessly!

Sorry, missed that you lost connectivity…
Which browser do you use…?
Do you use any (other) firewall…?
Which error do you get…?
Do you use Spybot…?

  1. Windows Internet Explorer
  2. All firewalls have been shut down
  3. I get a “Internet Explorer cannot display the web page” error, and there is NO sign of communication between the PC and the DSL modem doing the related diagnostic displays a claim that the Ethernet connection is missing - but it is all there properly - and this laptop PC is working fine thru a wireless hub and into that same DSL modem.
  4. No

Obviously, SOMETHING has been trashed in my Internet Network Connections program caused by installing, then UNinstalling Avast - and I need to find out WHAT, and how to restore or correct it!

Hi, not sure if this what you need…but is an option.

Canyon City,

I know you didnt want guesses and its probably wrong, but it only takes a few seconds to check. You might want to make sure the proxy setting is unchecked. Tools> Internet Options> Connections> LAN Settings.

Sat

I tried that, but the freeware version doesn’t provide any help with PC connectivity, and I’m not likely to buy yet ANOTHER antivirus program to (hopefully!) repair what a couple of others have created…

Also checked the proxy suggestion - was properly setup, so no help there either.

I’m pretty well convinced that no one here has experienced my specific issue - nor does anyone have a surefire way to correct it, so will undoubtedly have to reinstall my complete operating system, and all programs and updates to restore my PC - probably needed for a good housecleaning anyway…

@ Canyon City

Get rid of ZoneAlarm.

There are several users that can not get ZoneAlarm working correctly with avast!.

ZA antivirus is conflicting with avast at driver (low) level.

Two antivirus wont get along!!!

ZA’s firewall gets along great with avast! antivirus.

ZoneAlarm offers a wide range of security products.

Don’t confuse ZA’s firewall with ZA’s Forcefield or ZA’s antivirus. ::slight_smile:
