Real Time AntiSpyware suggestions

I am using Avast AV Home and Online Armor Firewall (free version) on a Win2000 computer.

I am wondering if I need to add a RealTime Antispyware. And if so, what would be recommended in the free catagory. I have been considering Comodo BOClean, ThreatFire, SpywareTerminator, and SpyCatcherExpress. Are there others to consider

Spybot Search and Destroy is free. It also has a real-time scanner included called TeaTimer. And updates are usually posted weekly.

spybot is not a very good antispyware really. It’s pretty basic in protection/detection. If you want a realtime scanning antispyware, Spywareterminator is the best free option since it also has HIPS protection.

Maybe you like this?! I will stay with AVG Antispyware without resident shields

Avast combined with Windows Defender is a good solution and free, also the only one for x64 Windows.

i dont recommend using windows defender because it let a vundo infection slip right by without any warnings when i was using it with resident protection and fully updated. Spyware doctor starter addition does not have realtime scanning, but it is a good scanner.

Ad-Aware works fine with avast! for me, as I run both simultaneously here at work(XP SP2)

AdAware is very lightweight when compared to the more recent anti-spyware programs such as SAS, SpywareTerminator or AVG anti-spyware (which is also going down hill).

The only things adaware found on my system were cookies and false positives.

Focusing on free stuff, after much experimentation I’m currently pretty-well settled with Avast, WinPatrol and SUPERAntispyware. I.E no resident/realtime AS
If you feel you really must have real-time antispyware slowing your system down ::), consider paying USD19.95 for full SUPERAntispyware or use (carefully) the resident component of Spyware Terminator.

Thanks so much for all the information and advise. I find it value and appreciate your replies.

To Vladimyr:

You commented: “use (carefully) the resident component of Spyware Terminator”.

Could you explain? Is there a danger in using SpywareTerminator?

err well

Crawler ( the company behind ST ) was once a “shady” business and was into IBIS and Adware. BUT they have cleaned up their act and I myself use ST and Superantispyware (paid) and they both make a killer team.

Hi greyowl

Sorry for not being more explicit :-[. (I was in a hurry… so what’s new?)

Akbaa’s historical comment is worth bearing in mind. However what I was getting at is that any anti-malware product is only as trustworthy as its last false-positive and ST has had FP issues, though none that I’ve heard recently.
My experience with SUPERAntispyware is that it is very good at discerning the difference between what must be removed and what can be safely left behind. Most others are either less effective with the bad stuff, too aggressive with things that don’t cause any problems (or even software I installed myself!), and/or make a mess when removing it.

Thanks Valdimyr for the further explanation.

I am a novice in this area, so appreciate the perspective.

I would certainly like to not slow my computer down needlessly if I can still be protected. I keep hearing how great SuperAntispyware is but have not understood why until now.

Do you use a firewall at all?

If you install Spyware Terminator you also get the Crawler Toolbar. It’s your decision, i don’t trust it at all :-\

Edit: I read that SAS can’t be easily deinstalled by the software panel, is that right?

greyowl re: firewall

I’m behind a router/firewall/proxy so I don’t need extra inbound protection. You’ve seen this thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=33316.0
I’ve recently used PC Tools Firewall http://www.pctools.com/firewall/ with no problems, but not on W2000.

It used to be an optional download. If it’s now compulsory… that’s a definite minus >:(

I haven’t heard of or experienced this. Come to think of it I’ve never actually tried to uninstall it.:o

You can choose if you want Crawler toolbar or not. I don’t install WSG, because i don’t trust toolbars, well i have installed and hided Imageshack toolbar, because i upload a lot of pictures.
You can uninstall easyly ST.On Sunday and yesterday i tested SAS pro and uninstalled ST without problems. I tested it bacuse i was thinking purchase pro version. But i didn’t like it. I prefer SAS free edition and ST as real time scanner. With SAS pro i had a lot of problems with my old game Need for speed Road Challenge/High Stakes. I noticed uses only a bit of RAM but a lot of CPU.
I’m using AVAST home, ST, COMODO BOClean, COMODO Firewall and my system is clean. Well i surf with FF and NoScript,ABP… and i insytall only trusted programs.

I tried it a few days ago (from http://www.spywareterminator.com/ ) - it seems to be compulsory now

I’ll give SAS a try :-*

When you install ST you can choose.

Yes, with SpywareTerminator you can choose, but you have to be careful in the installation because if you choose to include the Web Security Guard then the Crawler Toolbar is added also.
