Rescue Disk missing aswShell.exe

Avast free on Win XP, creating Rescue Disk fails. I figured out over several days that mu USB key was too small. Avast should estimate the size and not even start if it is too small and if it does not have enough room should say so each time a copy file is attempted. Instead of 256MB I used 1GB. That was big enough to create it successfully, but when I boot it, it boots fine but shows a warning window “Unable to Launch main avast! Rescue Disk shell aswShell.exe”. If I google this I learn only that it is created by Avast and it is considered a trojan horse!? Any ideas? Does anybody else have this file on their USB Rescue Disk? (Please don’t send me one unless you are working for Avast)

If you only want avast to respond, you should not post on a public webboard.

I’d be happy to answer your question but you don’t want it from me so
here’s how to contact Avast directly:
http://support.avast.com/support/home
or
http://support.avast.com/support/tickets/new

I appreciateyour reply, Bob. I did not want the awshell.exe to be sent to me, I wanted to get the Rescue Disk process fixed. And I’m leary of exe’s from someone I don’t know, hence I request people not to send one one. I submitted a ticket - thanks for the link. On my monitor, I did not scroll down far enough to see that option.

Eddy, When I go to Avast the forum (here) is one of the options, so that is why I’m using it. Like I told Bob, I did want a response, I did not want the exe sent to me.

Thought you meant you didn’t want a response from a non avast employee :-[

I never offered to send you the file ???

Since only a few people reported this issue, I start to wonder if it is OS and/or hardware specific or if people doing something wrong while trying to create the disk.

Mark,

What exact OS/SP ?
What exact version of avast ?
Are you creating the disk directly or do you download the ISO and than create the disk ?
etc.

I have 3 copy of Avast Premier and am unable to get a rescue disk working. I can build successfully a USB or CDROM of the rescue disks. I see no errors. When I reboot the system (any of the three) all load the USB or CDROM and all come back with this same exact error Unable to launch missing awsShell.exe. All three systems are Windows Home or Windows Pro 10 and up to date with everything. All three are newer systems using UEFI. That is the only pattern I can provide.

So your problem is not in the creation but in the use of a created rescue media. ???

Please answer the questions.
Only saying it is not working is not really helping

Rescue Disk Broken AGAIN

It tells me that the Rescue USB has neen created successfully.

However, the media can’t be used to boot the system so it’s useless.
I’ve created the Media while the Avast Self Defense was active and while it was turned Off.
That same error appears in both scenarios.
Being told that the rescue disc was successfully created and then finding out when you need it that it doesn’t work isn’t good. :frowning:

I actually have to confirm that I tried Avast Rescue Disk too and it failed…
I reported on this issue here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=147064.msg1275840#msg1275840
Last time the response was “We cant hear youuu! It cant be trueee!”, so I somehow accepted it as it is since I am using the free version

Below are the specs of my hardware / software:
Notebook ASUS X555LD K555 Series, Intel Core i5 @1.7GHz, 8 Ggb RAM DDR3
Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Avast Free Edition 12.3.2279 (build 12.2.3126.2)

Avast, is it something to do with the required side-by-side bindingRedirect policy for Avast.VC140.MFC and Avast.VC140.CRT not being on the Recovery Disk? I could be totally wrong!

You may need this file: aswShMin.exe … You find in C:Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\Rescue Disk

The created Media does not boot. Avast needs to fix this.

Confirmed, similar reports in the German section.

Is Avast supposed to look at each computer and determine what files it needs for Bootable Media ?
Or does the user creating a Rescue Disk or USB need to first put those files on it for it to be able to
boot and then and the file Avast would run ?

You apparently don’t know how this works or have never tried it. Please do so.
This is how it’s supposed to work:

Hi guys, is it fixed in build 2280 for you…!??

You would think something this important would have been worked on.

It’s still broken. >:(
