Every time I start up the Simple Interface, it shows that Resident Protection is Disabled. I change this to Standard (or even High), and then close the interface. If I immediately open the interface again, it will show that Resident Protection is disabled. What am I doing wrong? It also no longer appears in the icon try (like the old version use to), and the only process I see running in memory is aswUpdSv.exe.
Should I try re-installing? Has something gone wrong with my copy? Any tips would greatly be appreciated. I think this is a fabulous product and I really hope I can figure this out.
There are some aspects of 4-home that don’t seem to update, or at least update their display, until avast is closed and then re-opened. The database version and date, on the Status (usually main) screen, is one of them if I manually update, at least on my system.
I’m surprised you’re still encountering the problem if you’re closing and then re-opening the interface. But hopefully one of the experts will be able to come up with a solution for you.
The reboot did it (Yay Culpeper!). The avast system tray icon now appears correctly, and my changes (resident protection in the simple interface set to standard) now persist. I loath rebooting my machine, but perhaps I should try that before posting any questions in the future.

techie 101 : I was initially only trying to set the resident shield setting in the simple interface, not for any particular section (IM/P2P/Standard), since these options were not available to me prior to the reboot.
I’m having the same problem mentioned, except I don’t think I totally understand what you guys mean by ‘selecting persist the changes’ or ‘Save as’. I can’t find those command anywhere. If you mean by rebooting the computer after I’ve made those changes, that still doesn’t seem to help.
Another thing I’m concerned about is that avast doesn’t load straight away during startup. The resident protection (with the ‘a’ in the task bar) doesn’t come up until a few minutes later. Is this normal?

I am having the same issues as TheLittleGuy - not sure where to save the changes & rebooting doesn’t help.
I no longer get Avast loading on startup at all (I did in the previous versions) and there is no icons in the system tray. Also it is so much slower than before eg when I click to change the resident protection from disabled it takes 10 seconds or more to do anything!!
double click the icon ball and when you select to start or terminate a provider (email scanner, standard shield, etc) it will ask if want the changes to “persist.” Select to persist change. It is the same thing as asking if you want to save the changes.
Thanks Culpeper. Some troubles of the residents are solved by a second, well-succeeded installation. And, like you said, choosing to ‘persisting’ the changes shoud solve the problems… unfortunatelly, some systems does not function this way and I cannot imagine why…
I’ve tried following your exact instructions with uninstalling and then reinstalling, unfortunately this didn’t fix the problem for me. It is exactly like it was after the initial install. I’ve used beclean, regclean and the avast uninstall program.
Whenever I set the resident protection to normal/high, it’ll always revert back to disable as soon I shut it. However, I think I still do have resident protection, except it doesn’t load during startup, it loads up 5-10 minutes later by itself or I need to manually open avast before the ‘a’ icon appears in the taskbar. When I put my mouse over the ‘a’ icon it says I have 5 providers, 3 of which are running. The weird thing though, is that when I press ctrl+alt+delete… There nothing on the menu showing that I’ve got avast running.
Under setting->confirmations in avast, ‘ask whether to persist changing resident provider status’ is ticked but I never get asked any questions when I DO change the status.
I used to have norton antivirus 2002, and I’ve uninstalled before the first time I installed it. However for some reason when I install avast, it still thinks I have norton installed on my computer. Could this be the problem? I’ve already clean my registry, so I don’t know why I’m getting this message.
One more thing, I’ve run msconfig to see what I’ve got in the startup… the only avast file is ashserv.exe . What does this file do?

ashServ.exe is indeed the avast! executable for the resident protection. But it certainly shouldn’t take 10 minutes to start!
It’s possible that the Norton Antivirus is the reason… try to search this board, Technical had a number of posts on the problem. It seems that it’s not exactly easy to remove Norton…
Sorry guys, I’ve tried it and its still the same. I have managed to get rid of Norton Antivirus, as avast no longer detects it when I install it but I’m still having the same problems mentioned earlier.
However when going through the instructions to remove NA, I did notice that when searching through my registry for “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers” there was no folder for virtualdevicedrivers. There was nothing there for avast or norton, so I’m not too sure what the problem is.
Sorry, if you do not have this key into your registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers) in a XP system, you do not have avast! correctly installed if I’m not wrong.
If you uninstall avast and install it again, won’t this key appear? If not, do you want I post it for you here in forums so you will be able to import it to your Registry?
