Scan stops on it's own

I have a scheduled scan every Tuesday at 12 AM. The last 2 weeks when I get on the computer the following morning it says the scan was stopped. I then start a full scan manually which stops after a few minutes and says it was completed with no treats found. I have to go to work so I don’t have time to figure out what’s gone wrong, so I just leave. Last week I forgot that it had happened, but this week I am back from work and trying to figure it out.
I searched these forums but couldn’t find my exact problem.
I am using Windows XP and am going to try an uninstall/re-install of avast! I’ll post back when it’s done if it works or not.
But until then anybody got a clue as to what is going on?

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall but it still stops the scan after a few minutes. so now i’m stuck.

Help, please!

I started a quick scan 20 minutes ago and it is still scanning but has stuck on the file SVC:xmlprov > C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe for several minutes.
I will let it run tonight and check back in the morning to see if it has move past the file or (fingers crossed) finished the scan properly.
Still no full scan working…

ok it’s morning and it’s still stuck on that file. I stopped it.
Now what do I do?

Is this the right place to get help for avast! ? No one is answering my question…

attach a OTL diagnostic log here in this topic, then maybe one of the removal experts can spot a problem

you find OTL here. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Please do not post the same problem multiple times.
That is NOT the way to get help.
And have a bit more patience.
You only posted 1 1/2 day ago.

1 Control panel > programs > add/remove, remove avast
2 Run the uninstall utility
3 Reboot
4 Run CCleaner, delete ALL “trash” files
5 Run CCleaner and cleanup the registry. You will have to scan/fix several time till nothing is find anymore
6 Reboot
7 Do a clean install of avast

Here are all the logs the link asked me to include.
Malware bytes gave me 2 logs one before removal and one after I included both.
OTL did not give me and extras.txt like it said it would but it did give me a OTL.txt and an OLTscan.txt so I included both of those.
The OLTscan will have to be in a different post along with the aswMBR ones. it won’t let me add anymore attachments to this post.

here are the rest.

I just tried the scan again with the same results. The full scan sticks at SVC:xmlprov > C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe then stops and the quick scan sticks and just keeps counting the time… I’m going to try Eddys solution. I used to use CCleaner all the time but after after I got malwarebytes it kept coming up with zero results so I got rid of it. Well I’m off to download ccleaner and do a reinstall of avast again.

OK I did what Eddy said and I still have the same problem.
Now What?

This may be a system incompatibility problem as it is the third instance of this I have seen. I have asked the other user to upload a dump file and I have also notified Avast of this problem

+1
the same problem in the Russian part of the forum, I suggested them to contact with avast! support.

Are there any recent unpXXXXXX files (X being some numbers) in avast! log folder (on Windows XP, it is c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\log) ?

Thank you Igor, I will also see if the others have them when they reply… They all appear to stick on the SVC part of the scan

Do you need a dump file from me? And if so, where do I find one to send you?

If the unpXXXX files are not there (to indicate a crash of the scan), I would need a dump of the AvastSvc.exe process, taken at the moment the scan is already frozen (self-defense, and possibly also Behavior Shield needs to be disabled in advance, to be able to create a dump).

I have found that if I go to settings under Quick Scan and then go to Performance and untick the last option ‘Scan all files in the order they appear’, the scan will work. For a full scan I have to untick the second and third options and it does work, but I have to unplug my external hard drives and do them separately. I have gone back to Avast Free because I had so much trouble with these scans in Internet Security 8. I have Windows XP…hope this helps…

apologies…for the Full Scan I can untick Scan files in the order they appear only and that works…

Thanks Jenray! This seems to be working! It has already don’t more files and folders than before but it is still running. So, I will check back when I get home from work and see how it did…
