Unable to Access Enhanced User Interface In Avast 4 Pro

I downloaded & installed the lastest version of Avast 4 Pro yesterday, then spent a bit of time in the EUI setting up tasks etc. I ran a complete scan of my computer & everything was fine but today I can’t access the EUI, even when clicking on ashEnhcd.exe, nothing happens, when I use the SUI, thats fine. The icon in the system tray seems to work okay & the On-Access Protection Control is running. I have tried a repair from the Add Or Remove applet which didn’t work. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Please check the task manager - isn’t the Enhanced User Interface (ashEnhcd.exe) already running?
There can be only one instance started… so I’d suggest to kill the other one, if any.

There is only one ashEnhcd.exe running in the Task Manager

Kill it and start it again to see if it works…

Unable to end process or process tree, getting “The operation could not be completed. Access is denied” message.

You are bumping into the avast! self defence module.
Program Settings, Troubleshooting, Disable self-defence module, that would then allow you to terminate the process in task manager. Don’t forget to enable the self-defence when you are done.

I disabled the self-defence module & terminated the process which solved the problem until I rebooted, then back to the same problem of unable to access the EUI, I then disabled the self-defence module & terminated the process again & I am able to access the EUI, probably only until I reboot

Before you reboot for the next time, try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

I don’t know if this will resolve the problem, but it won’t hurt.

I tried a repair of Avast, then rebooted & I am unable to access the EUI

What is your OS ?
I assume that the EUI process is shown in the Task Manager but that the window sdowesn’t open?

Do you have any settings or applications to block pop-ups that might get in the way ?
I believe there was something similar in the forums.

OS is Windows XP home with Service Pack 3. The EUI process is shown in the Task Manager but the window doesn’t open. I don’t have any settings or applications to block pop-ups & I did a lot of searching on the forums before posting & couldn’t find anything.

That is good and bad, good in that XP doesn’t have the same sort of issue with UAC and permissions, bad in that it eliminates a possible cause.

Did you actually insert the Pro license key ?
What other security application do you have installed ?

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

If not the only other suggestion I can suggest is a clean reinstall, download the latest pro version, 4.8.1296 and save it to your HDD, and use that when you reinstall. Ensure you have your license key before you do this.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  3. install the latest version, reboot.

Do you have any firewall / HIPS / other security software installed?

I have discovered that if I turn of the Intel ProSet/Wireless software, which is used to connect to my laptop to a wireless network, then I can access the EUI, if I switch it back on I can still access the EUI, if I then reboot the problem reappears until I switch of the wireless software again.
Any advice on fixing this conflict would be appreciated

Can you please try what David suggested here (in the quoted field), if it makes any difference?

I have done the following as suggested,

  1. Start Notepad and open the file \Data\avast4.ini
  2. Find the section [Common]
  3. Add the following line into that section (at the end, beginning… wherever):
    SunbeltKPFHack=2
  4. Save the changes; avast! self-defense might pop up with a message about avast4.ini being changed, so confirm that

and so far it have worked, I will post back with an update in a couple of days

Thanks for the update, fingers crossed it holds ;D

Avast working fine now. Thanks for the input from everybody,

No problem, glad we could help.

Just one other point, do you happen to have the McAfee Site Advisor browser plug-in/add-on installed ?

No, its not installed.
