One thing I have noticed is that if you are running an application full screen, any notifications won’t pop up but will just show up in the Notifications area after. This includes if you use two monitors like I do and have something full screen on one of them, which I often do (I often watch Youtube videos full screen on my second monitor while I have my ‘primary’ monitor used for other web browsing).
Something I have noticed is that if I just exited a full screen in an app (again, usually Youtube) and then run a web shield test with a link, It won’t produce a pop up alert but I’ll get the blue dot on the tray icon and it will show up in notifications in the Avast UI.
I’m not sure if that’s what’s happening to others when they don’t get the alert, especially since people aren’t even getting the Notifications at all. But something to consider.
Whilst that error message image I posted would appear it didn’t work, e.g. trigger the Web Shield alert. I did find an entry in the Avast Notifications a little while later indicating a threat blocked.
Today Feb26, my Avast24.9 auto-updated to Avast25.1. This is despite Update being set to Manual.
I use Avast24.9 since I don’t need any of the Icarus features, which seem to be buggy
Also Avast24.9 is the last verstion in which vpsupd worked. I have many builds using
Avast free and vpsupd is fasgter than online updates. Plus it’s more reliable with iffy internet access. Before vpsupd does it’s job it does a self-test to insure it is intact NON told me Avast has no intention of fixing this bug. Vpsupd is still being generated but is useless to current version users.
Is this Avast’s stance on versions? Is it auto-update to newest version, no exceptions, and irrespective of any bugs?
I thought I relayed the latest response from the Avast devs, but it seems it wasn’t, sorry for that. They want to know why vpsupd is needed for general users/usage.
And Avast usually honors user choice of manual update, though I remember there are several times of force-updates before, for some reason.
I have 4 Win7/10 computers. 3 are multi-boot, so there are 4 Win10 builds and 3 Win7 builds. Each build has different software so they are somehwat dedicated.
When I used automatic virus defs updates, they would often fail. Or Avast would report success but after it would act strangely until one or two new updates were installed. A few times Avast would seem to shutdown and I’d have to re-install. So, internet handshake error detect/correct is not 100% effective if the connection has drop-outs.
So I set virus updates to Manual and instead used vpsupd. All the problems went away. I’ve never had a vpsupd update fail. And with multiple Avast free installs, this is much faster
I don’t browse suspicious websites. Avast hasn’t blocked or quarantined anything for many years.
It is likely that vpsupd is an executable zip file. If a zip file is corrupt, you can’t expand it.
Also NON, after the auto-update to Avast25.1 happened, all the Avast24.9 Program Files were still there. Avast25.1 was installed in a differentt directory and Avast24.9 was not actually un-installed, just mostly overwritten. Now I have to use AvastClear to clean-up everything, then re-install. Tell Avast they are being very sloppy in their actions. I guess this is Avast’s method to do a un-install without a reboot.
Yes, I installed Avast24.9 in a customized folder. That option was removed in Avast24.10
I did my Monthly scan on the remaining 6 Avast24.9 builds in the past few days. On one buld I was pre-emptive: I uninstalled Avast24.9 using AvastClear, then installed Avast25.1 manually before the auto-update could take effect. On the other builds, there was a auto-update to Avast25.1. On 3 builds, when auto-updaed the prior Avast24.9 was deleted in \Program Files. But on 2, I had to delete these files afterwards by disabling self-defense. In every case, my Customized Monthly scan was deleted after the auto-update. A few other settings were also different. I got wise and on some builds, backed-up the settings before the update.
All-in-all, I don’t understand why Avast chose to force this update. I miss using vpsupd, and am closely watching how well online virus defs updates are installing. I’ve set virus defs update to Manual and disabled Streaming.
