if we do try again let me know and well start brand new.

No, stay here, unless you want to move on, and try elsewhere of course.
The reason is if you start another help topic about this somewhere else, or at another forum, the folk there won’t know what’s been attempted here, and vice versa, and it will end up just being more complex, and taking longer.
OK we well stay here. (smile)
OK, I’ve had a think, asked some advice, done a little research.
There’s a couple of steps I’d like to try. (A couple, maybe three, we’ll see how it unfolds.)
First I’d like to have a look at your hosts file. Something is stopping your browser getting to the appropriate page, though it doesn’t seem malicious enough to be a hijack, since you can still get to some of the pages in that site.
- Please open HJT, as we discussed before by running it as an administrator.
- Press the fourth button: “Open the Misc Tools section”.
- Under System tools, click on “Open Hosts File Manager.” (first picture below)
- Then push the button under the window, “Open in Notepad”. (second picture. I’ve place my cursor on the button, and put a red rectangle around it.)
- In the notepad that will then appear, under “edit”, select “select all”, then copy the contents. (Right click the mouse on the dark area, select “copy”.
- Post the info here, by opening a reply window, then paste it by right clicking and selecting "paste.
- Nothing else in that post please, just the contents of the notepad.
More later.
T
PS, you can then close the notepad, and close HijackThis.
well wouldn’t ya believe this there is already trouble it say it cannot fine the host file do you want to create a new, default host file I guess I should click yes on that well be write back Sharon
did you want me to run a scan as admin before I click I think you said that I just did not do that one I stated off with the 2nd one I going to do the scan now but do you want a log or not?
well wouldn't ya believe this there is already trouble it say it cannot fine the host file do you want to create a new, default host file I guess I should click yes on that well be write back SharonAh. Hopefully that might just have been part of the problem. Before doing the next step, can you just confirm you ran it as administrator? (HJT can not access the hosts file on Vista if not run as admin.) And then have a look for the folder "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc", and see if there is a file in that folder simply titled "hosts". (This can be done using the search function, or by clicking on "my computer" to open Windows explorer and then navigating to the folder concerned.) Let me know if you need more info or pictures on finding this. You will probably need to show hidden and system files to find it, in "folder options".
did you want me to run a scan as admin before I click I think you said that I just did not do that one I stated off with the 2nd one I going to do the scan now but do you want a log or not?No, we don't need a scan at this point. What I wanted was for you to open HjT as admin,(important, for the reason given above) then go through the steps I listed to view the hosts file. If you hadn't actually opened it by right clicking and selecting "ran as" then "administrator", do it again, and let me know.
I have done that well do more when I can mike is taking the computer chai
I’m confused at where we are at this point, as this thread is getting long.
As far as I can tell, Sharon can’t find her hosts file. Hopefully Tarq’s suggestion will help you find it, as it is located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc
It doesn’t have a file extension associated with it, so if you try to just “double-click” on it to open it up, Windows won’t know what to open it with. You can safely just use “Notepad.” There should be some text in that file.
As for your Java Problem, it’s easiest to just remove all “Java” related programs in your Add/Remove Programs applet in the control panel.
Then, just go to http://www.java.com and click the “Free Java Download” button. It will download and install the latest version for you, and that should be it.
Occasionally, java will tell you that updates are available, (Java version 6, update 13 is the latest I believe).
I haven’t actually used HJT in a very long time, only because I haven’t had to use it! Avast keeps me pretty clean, and so does malware-bytes and safe browsing habits. So, Tarq is helping you look for something in HJT, and you should follow up with him on his requests.
I just want to thank Tarq too, he’s helping quite a bit on this issue, after I sort of abandoned it after he “took over” (and don’t think that I mind, I’m very greatful for the help that you’re offering her!).
Hopefully, one of us or others will help you get your computer straight, Sharon.
I don’t “claim ownership” rights to this thread. Far from it; if someone else who has been following it wants to jump in with useful advice that will help the owner of the thread (Sham1313) far be it from me to object!
My object is the same as others here who have helped: let’s try and help the OP sort these problems out.
Sharon, Scythe provides a good alternative advice regarding Java. A method you might want to try.
He also provides another way of getting to see the hosts file without using HjT. I actually thought of getting you to try this method. If you do, you will have to run notepad as admin, to get it to open up a system file (hosts) and “OK” the UAC alert.
The reason to have a look at the hosts file is in case there are some dodgy entries in there preventing you from opening some sites. It’s perhaps unlikely there is anything wrong with the hosts file, but it is worth checking.
And Scythe, thank you for your kind words.
Absolutely bro, anything we can all do to help, and thanks again for everything you provided her!
I’m sure others would help too, but (and don’t take offense, Sharon) her posts are generally hard to understand.
I try my best, as I’m sure that you do too.
I don’t know how well she comprehends our suggestions, so using HJT to edit the hosts file might be the easiest way to do it. Again though, I don’t use it often enough, so I don’t know which way is easier! Hopefully, one of our suggestions will get her the help that she needs…
Cheers! ![]()
I thank every one for trying to help me. some times my mind goes faster then I can write and will not write some of the words that go threw my mind so quickly. some times my mind goes faster then I can write and will not write some of the words that go threw my mind so quicklyAll good techs know how that goes... :)
As long as you understand what WE’RE saying, then I guess everything’s all good! lol.
Let us know what you found.
I went back to this point and copy this because it was as far as I could get.
it say it cannot fine the host file do you want to create a new, default host file.
I have done this much
Please open HJT, as we discussed before by running it as an administrator.
2) Press the fourth button: “Open the Misc Tools section”.
3) Under System tools, click on “Open Hosts File Manager.” this is where it says it can not fine the host files do you want to create a new, default host file. when some one tell me to say yes or no to this and I well be ready for the next step in the morning. thanks every and will see ya when I wake.
Sharon
Well, you definitely should have a “hosts” file.
It should contain something that looks like this in it:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host127.0.0.1 localhost
Sharon, Click on “yes” to having it create a new default hosts file.
Let us know haw that goes.
Problems doing that? (errors or similar) try looking for the hosts file yourself, manually, it is in the folder C:\Windows\system32\driversetc.
As said earlier, in folder options, you will have to “show hidden and system files” to find it.
and you’ll have to open it in Notepad -run as admin - and OK the UAC prompt.
The contents should be very similar to what Scythe944 posted.
OK the UAC prompt.
The contents should be very similar to what Scythe944 posted. just been up short while had to let the dogs out so well see what the day is like getting my computer running write don’t know what a UAC promt is but I well fine out. I click yes last night will see what I see now.
that 1st is a short copy paste to get me started of your last post. I will write more when I see how much I can do. morning to you or good night Sharon ![]()
Hi, it’s “good night” here.
UAC= User account control, and one reason why Vista can be annoying. If you want to view the file in notepad, you will have to answer one of these. (Assuming you can find the file, which you now should be able to.)
Night night.
