Unable to reactivate Avast Free antivirus

I have the same issue, whenever I click on select free antivirus it freezes and then promotional window pops up forcing me to buy the product and there is no button to avoid it. Basically both options on screenshot below lead to pretty much the same page without any options to continue free license. What a mess…

The first fix has clearly failed and Avast are asking people to submit a support file.

This could help with a second attempt at a fix.

I also have this issue. Windows 10 Pro installed with Avast Free since 2020. I’ve kept the program and definitions current. Right now I have 25.8.10387g (build 25.8.10387.947) installed. Here’s what mine is doing:

  1. I press Activate.
  2. It brings up the Select your security level window.
  3. I press Select for the free version. A brief pause occurs (~2-3 seconds).
  4. I get the Loyalty window as shown. All I can do there is either Get it now (which I don’t) or close via X. Selecting X to close just reveals the main UI.

Same loop no matter what.

I uninstalled last week using Revo Uninstaller. Downloaded the latest Free installer from the website. Installed. Rebooted. EXACT SAME issue.

Thank you all for responding. It seems that the fix did not work for all users, unfortunately.

We are aware of this situation and we are working on a fix with top priority.

We apologize for any inconvenience this might be causing.

As a former Systems Analyst Programmer in my last 4 years in the Army.

Quality control was a huge issue, program changes had to be first run through your Team Leader (Alpha testing) and then to Quality Control for further testing.

I’m still sat on Avast 25.5.xxxx as first off problems were reported on 25.6 and then 25.7. The biggest reason for this is the total lack of information/details on what has been updated, fixed or added in the Program Release notes, when they eventually posted.

This is why my Avast Program updates are set to Manual.

Even there are backdoors which can impact my 25.5, UI updates are one, Emergency Updates are another and finally Virus Definition Updates can (as far as I’m aware) include changes outside of definitions.

My only joy comes from my Avast Free update isn’t until February, hopefully they will manage to sort this out by then, sic.

Sorry if this has been gone thru. I’ve been trying to renew my free avast for a few weeks, following this forum. What worked for me (im pretty sure) is to repair the install. I’m windows11… i go to setting , apps, installed apps, and choose Avast Free Antivirus. click on the “…” and then “modify” . looks like Avast gets re-installed , then I’m all green, no more “YOUR LICENSE IS EXPIRED” flag on the avast panel. HTH.

Thanks for the input, hopefully some others with this problem can try and confirm.

Though some have reported doing a clean reinstall (uninstall using the uninstall utility from windows safe mode), reboot and install afresh and still bumped into this problem again.

I have been having the same issue, and my license has now expired. I am on Windows 10, program version 25.8.10387g (build 25.8.10387.0). I get the same three screen loop as described by others above.

I tried user3354’s solution, however it did not work for me.

I have used Avast since at least 2012 and this is the first time I’ve ever had an issue renewing the free version that I can remember.

I spoke too soon, the EXPIRED message is back, sorry for the head fake. Time for an alternative.

I got the one year reactivation message after only ONE MONTH!

NO MATTER WHAT I TRY IT WON’T LET ME… ENDLESS LOOP TO TRY AND FORCE FREE TRIAL.

JUST SAY YOU HAVE TO DO A FREE TRIAL AFTER 30 DAYS! WHY DO THIS SCAM CRAP?

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT ME FROM SCAMS BUT YOU CREATED A SCAMWARE PROGRAM?

AVAST USED TO BE GOOD BACK IN THE DAY. NO WONDER SO MANY COMPLAINTS HERE NOW.

I just wonder how long it can take to solve such simple issue … Typically something like 2 hours but in Avast … who knows

Hello all,

Just posting to add that this is happening to me as well, an even thought it was eventually said to not work I gave user3354’s app modify trick a try, and that didn’t work at all.

For some info:

Am using Windows 10 and with all the latest updates.

My version of Avast is: 25.8.10387.3045

Something else interesting is that while I have been using it so long I don’t even remember, and renewed it as normal each time it wanted that in that time, currently its showing as being installed on 09/02/25 in my programs list. Note: not in the date modified list, but the installed list.

So far I haven’t tried the more involved uninstall and reinstall stuff recommend here, but if I am right, as some are saying it doesn’t work for them, seems like a waste of time.

Currently have 3 days left before expiration, with I guess the only option is to uninstall it at that point if a fix is not found.

An interesting thought I have from your post DaveR, is based on the dates of the threads about this, it looks like it may have only started with some recent updates.

So could it be possible to find and reinstall a older version, get your years renewal done, then allow the update to the latest version if wanted?

As one would assume, this is not the right fix could be a work around to till they figure this out.

Guess a question is, is there a way to get a older version, and will it install without updating to a new one before you can get that done?

Avast only keeps the latest versions for download.

You would have to try a site that keeps historic program versions - you could this from the File Puma site:

There are many other versions, but I think this predates the issue since it predates this issue, I still have 25.5, but there is no way to say where this started as people only notice it when Avast Free comes up for renewal.

I believe you would also have to do a clean uninstall of Avast to ensure there are no remnants or you could be back to square one.

This is a copy of the on-line installer and not the off-line installation file, which I suspect at the time you try to install it it would install the latest version as it would connect to avast to do that.

The only thing that may be going for you is if Avast doesn’t find any remnants or the old installation and you have to register it. There could also be an issue if you register with the same email, as that would indicate your existing registration renewal date, so possibly square one again.

So it could be a lot of effort with little return.

If you can get a full off-line installation file for avast 25.4 it may go better.

Since some people claim that a clean installation does not solve the problem, I don’t see how installing an older version could make it disappear.

Traces of the expiration date therefore remain somewhere in the registry and are not deleted.

So, if you install an older version, I think this expiration information will also come back… unless older versions don’t look for the information in the same place.

And even if they don’t, it’s not sure that after updating to the latest version, avast won’t go back and look for the information where it is today.

That said, it doesn’t cost anything to try.
